Was persuaded to go here by a friend. The part of town it's in is... transitional but there are condos going up, so it's ok. The building is obviously a former bar & the bar dominates the room, so it might be tricky getting a table at peak hours. The interior is gaily decorated and the service is friendly. But, we came here for the food. And the food I'm pleased to report is good. Very good as in " how did I not know Honduran food was this good?" Good. The Pupusas are light, the empanadas are generous in size, and are filled with meat, including very tasty, burnt bits and come with a very sweet cabbage or jicama salad.. my friend had a coconut-based seafood soup, which he devoured & loved. We also ordered the super.baleados which were massive and essentially a meal in themselves. Think the Honduran version of a dhosa. And they had fresh homemade Horchata, like my old Salvadorean friends used to make. There were a lot of really enticing to desert offerings, and I wish we hadn't stuffed ourselves by over ordering from the appetizers. Next time. Far better than the typical Mexican fare that is so popular right now. I would choose this over them every any day. Will be back.

Stopped by this little Honduran gem on a weekday close to closing time. I always like to try something from other cultures so I asked of course for a recommendation and our server offered us a sample of the Horchata. It's a natural juice of several different kinds of nuts and grains. Very yummy! The inside was so lovely and inviting. The decor truly showed heart and soul into the place. Located in the Ward City brick building off of Dixie highway. Street parking available, outdoor & indoor seating. El Portal Mayo has 2 locations: Johnson street in Hollywood and Pompano Beach We ordered to share the Super Baleada and another dish I forgot the name of. (Sorry!) The Super Baleada was flavorful to include Carne, chorizo, aguacate and huevo. Overall pleasant experience and will definitely come back.

I saw the review of this place on my yelp feed. Yes, just ONE review and I was intrigued. Here was a local restaurant not that far away that I'd never heard about. And the food looked interesting. So I messaged the restaurant and asked for a copy of the menu. He sent only one page of it, but that was enough. We came for lunch and had a "knock your socks off" meal. The restaurant is north of Atlantic Boulevard and just east of Dixie Highway and the tracks. It's on the corner of the building. There are parking spaces in front. There are a few small tables outside and several tables and counter seats inside. The restaurant itself is not very big at all. We thought we'd share their fried seafood dish (from the "sharing" section of their menu) , but it contained tilapia. We switched to the whole fried snapper after Andrea showed us the fish and told us the cost. We are so glad we did! The fish (pargo) came with our choice of three sides. We chose white rice, regular red beans (not refried) and sweet plantains. All the sides were very good, but the whole fish was fantastic! My husband added some of their hot sauce to the fish, but I just added a touch of salt and a squeeze of lime. OMG! If you are a fish lover, and know how to navigate a whole fried fish, then this is for you. All that was left were a pile of bones and the spine. They also have a number of inexpensive lunch specials. Some items are ready made and can be dished up immediately (they had ropa vieja and 2 other items). There are tacos, arepas, pupusas, tamales, baleadas, as well as soups, too, that are quite reasonable. Although they are a Honduran restaurant, many other Latin country styles of food are represented. Oh, and they even serve breakfast. Some knowledge of Spanish is helpful, but you will be fine without it. Wish we had had more room to try a dessert -- they have two types of flan and a tres leches..., but maybe next time.

My wife spotted this place that had only one review posted, but enough to entice both of us out for a lunch adventure. Close by, we found the restaurant occupying the Northwest corner of the Ward City building. Parking available on the street directly in front. They offer inside and outside seating and as we observed, plenty of take out pickups. So many lunch specials and side dishes to choose from, it took a while to finally decide on a dish we could share... Pargo, a whole fried snapper (approximately 2 lbs), that came with 3 sides; we chose rice, red beans and maduros (sweet fried plantains). I was excited to discover and ordered fresh Passion Fruit juice as my beverage. Having negotiated a whole fried fish several times, we only left the skeleton and skull on our plate...delicious! I tried and enjoyed some of their house made hot sauce on my rice and beans. If you are seeking Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner, this is the place for delicious meals and friendly helpful service!
